Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (Ed.D)

The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership degree is dissertation-based and intended for practitioners who presently hold leadership roles in education or who aspire to leadership positions of influence through positions in school or college settings. This Doctoral Educational Leadership degree program is based on 60-credit hours of post-master degree study that incorporates a 12 credit hour research dissertation.  The degree program is designed to afford professionals in the field of education the opportunity to enhance and expand their knowledge base, conduct research, address current and pressing issues in education, and reinforce the competencies needed as a professional Christian leader in education.

The degree is designed for educational leaders, whether teachers or administrators at the K-12 level, in public or private schools who desire to advance as educational leaders, as well as foster and apply new research in the field of elementary and secondary education.

Course Delivery Format

In addition to the online courses, the Belhaven University School of Education has included two Residency Sessions as part of the plan of study. Doctoral candidates are required to attend Residency Sessions on the Jackson campus. Residencies meet at strategic periods throughout the Ed.D. plan of study. These two Residency Sessions allow a candidate to have real-time experiences with his/her professors, meet his/her dissertation chairperson, and develop a network of professional collegial friendships with other candidates in the program.  The Residencies have been scheduled to coincide with Phase II and Phase IV of the Ed.D. plan of study.

  • Phase I: Professional Advanced Education Courses the initial 30-33 credit hours of core content courses taken online (equates to the Ed.S. degree).
  • Phase II: Introductory & Orientation Courses to the Ed.D.- Residency 1 (R1).
  • Phase III: Research and Methods Course (no residency requirement/courses taken online).
  • Phase IV: Dissertation Block - Residency 2 (R2). Residency 2 is taken in conjunction with the candidate’s research and the writing of the dissertation and addresses the various stages of chapter development.  This design allows for personal one-on-one and face-to-face dissertation advisement.
  • Oral Defense: Upon approved completion of the candidate’s dissertation, he/she is required to have an Oral Defense of his/her dissertation on the Jackson campus.
